Background

Nortruss, the largest building supplies company in Darwin, was established by Darwin couple, Yvonne and Ross Rayner, 36 years ago as a roof truss plant. In the 1990s Nortruss diversified into general builders’ supplies and commercial hardware, timber importation and steel fabrication. Nortruss now:

  • operates a high tech timber and steel truss and wall frame plant, including a technical services department of eight people who use computer aided design to provide project management support and advice on cost effective design and materials best suited to the tropics;

  • has a commercial hardware department to meet growing demand from Darwin’s booming construction sector, including locks, doors, mouldings and power tools;

  • is the largest timber distributor in Northern Australia, supplying Australian and imported hardwood and softwood (all imported timber has chain of custody certification which ensures timber is harvested legally and meets forest management standards.

The company is based at Winnellie and has about 80 staff. It supplies major construction, mining and remote housing projects across the top of Australia, and has been the major supplier for the Australian and New Zealand defence forces during the reconstruction of East Timor.

Nortruss has distributorships for a range of products, including Multinail engineered timber trusses, steel wall frames, James Hardie building products, Hume doors, metal door frames, Lockwood and Lane locks, power tools, Air-Cell insulation, and Boral Hancock plywood products.
